Kavya ❀

I was sitting in front of the dressing table while the makeup artist carefully finished my makeup. Today was my wedding day.

I was getting married to the love of my life, the man I had been with for 5 years, 9 months, and 11 days.

After my parents passed away, he was the only light left in my life.

I grew up with my grandparents, but they never really loved me. To them, I was always a disappointment because I was a girl. They believed my parents should have had another child, a boy.

I had lived with that mindset my whole life, so eventually it became normal for me to feel like an unwanted child.

But my parents were different.

Not even for a single moment did they make me feel unloved. To them, I was everything.

Unfortunately, destiny had other plans. I lost them when I was just ten years old, and from that day onward my life slowly turned into something I never wished for.

Everything felt empty.

Until I met Siddharth Gupta.

I met him when I was twenty, and somehow he became the reason I started believing in happiness again.

"Kavya..." Akriti, my best friend, called from behind me.
"The priest is calling you. It's time to come to the mandap."

"Yes... coming," I replied softly as the makeup artist sprayed the setting spray over my face.

"Come fast. Siddharth is getting restless waiting for you," Akriti teased with a mischievous smile.

"Yes, yes... tell him to wait a few more moments," I said, blushing slightly while giving my reflection one final look.

I was wearing a beautiful green saree, the blouse heavily embroidered but still elegant. The jewellery perfectly complemented the look, and the makeup artist had done everything exactly the way I wanted.

For the first time in a long while, I felt beautiful.

"Thank you... I really loved the makeup and the overall look," I said sincerely, holding the makeup artist's hands. I was overwhelmed by how perfectly she had transformed me.

Just as I was about to step out of the room, the door opened.

My grandmother walked in.

I froze.

Not now... please not now...
Today is my day. I don't want a scene. Please don't make me cry right now...

"Kavyaaa... come on! It's getting late," Akriti called again as she walked into the room to check on me.

She immediately sensed the tension.

"Kavya... Siddharth..." she said softly, holding my hand. She knew exactly why I was nervous. After all, she had known my situation since we became friends in the 10th grade.

"Grandma, please..." I tried to speak, gathering all my courage.

But she raised her hand, stopping me before I could finish.

"I'm not here to create a scene," she said coldly. "I just want to remind you of something."

Her words felt like ice.

"You have always been the bad luck of this family. Now that you are getting married, behave yourself. Don't bring your bad luck into his family as well."

My chest tightened.

"Consider yourself lucky that he even chose you. And remember one more thing, after today, once you leave this house after your bidai, you will not contact us again."

My heart sank.

"Do not come back here. Our doors will always remain closed for you."

I tried my best to hold back my tears.

Don't cry... don't cry...
Your makeup will be ruined... not today...

"I was finally getting the life I always wanted..." my voice broke as tears slipped down my cheeks.

Akriti quickly wiped them away.

"Grandma, how can you say something like that to her?" Akriti snapped angrily. "She has always respected you, and you have no right to insult her like this. She is a human being!"

"Stop."

The voice came from the doorway.

Siddharth.

His tone was calm, but the rage in it was impossible to miss.

My grandmother fell silent.

His fists were clenched as he struggled to control his anger.

"That's enough," he said firmly. "She has listened to you people her entire life, but that ends today."

He stepped closer to me and held my hand.

"And let me make one thing very clear," he continued, his voice steady but sharp. "She will never have to see your faces again, not because you asked her to, but because I will never let her go through this again."

My grandmother looked furious.

Siddharth didn't care.

"She can live however she wants. It's her life, and I will always support her decisions. People like you have no right to interfere."

Then he said something that made my heart ache in the best way possible.

"And for your information, I didn't choose her."

He looked at me with a soft smile.

"She chose me. I'm the lucky one here."

He gently squeezed my hand.

"She has always been my lucky charm."

By then I was standing completely still, overwhelmed by everything that had just happened.

"You okay?" he asked softly.

He picked up a water bottle from the table, opened it, and handed it to me.

"Drink."

Then he turned to Akriti.

"Akriti, can you please tell the priest we will be there in five minutes?"

She nodded and left the room.

My grandmother walked out silently after hearing Siddharth's words.

The makeup artist quickly fixed my ruined makeup after my tears had smudged it.

When she finished, Siddharth held my hand again and led me towards the mandap.

I thought I was walking towards the happiest moment of my life.

But what happened after that...

Destroyed everything.

My life.
My happiness.
My heart.

I was left broken, hurt, and completely shattered.
